A specification can shape which products are considered, but technical acceptance is not the same as a purchase order. Construction product sales require continuity between the design discussion, procurement decision and practical use on site.

Understand the requirement before promoting the product

Read the application requirement and ask what outcome it is intended to protect. Relevant conditions may include performance, installation constraints, maintenance or compatibility with other systems.

Identify what evidence the evaluator expects. Technical literature, test results, reference applications and trials have different purposes; use the appropriate evidence and do not overstate its scope.

Engage the people who shape the decision

Map the design and approval process for the particular project. Determine whether the conversation concerns an initial design, a permitted equivalent or a change to an existing choice.

Provide clear application support and document unresolved questions. The aim is to help the evaluator make a sound choice, not simply to secure a product name in a document.

Connect acceptance to procurement and delivery

Once technically considered, the offer still needs commercial alignment. Confirm scope, quantities, delivery expectations, installation responsibilities and the buyer’s decision process.

Track the handover between specification work and the commercial team. Without ownership, the supplier can lose visibility just as pricing and procurement become decisive.

Measure progress through evidence

Separate contact made, evidence submitted, technical evaluation, acceptance and commercial negotiation in the pipeline. A project should not be treated as a forecast order solely because a technical meeting went well.

Review the next decision, responsible stakeholder and action needed. This creates a clearer view of opportunity quality while respecting that final decisions remain with the project organisations.

Questions for leadership

What to take into the next discussion

  1. Understand the purpose behind the requirement.
  2. Keep technical acceptance and order probability distinct.
  3. Assign ownership across specification and procurement stages.
